It has been suggested that the 'Portrait of a young woman', private collection (RKD Images no. 37901), is the pendant to the 'Portrait of a man in a red coat' (Valentiner 1930C, p. 260). In 2017 Manuth proposed that the 'Portrait of a young woman' from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (RKD Images no. 107567) is a "more suitable candidate for the pendant" to the 'Portrait of a man in a red coat' (online collection catalogue, accessed 2017-05-11).

According to the RRP the cradled panel was possibly originally rectangular, although the portrait was painted as an oval (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 638-646).

Huidige toeschrijving: Rembrandt
After its discovery in 1930 this painting was regarded as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Tümpel in 1986 who attributed it to a pupil of Rembrandt (Valentiner 1930C, p. 260; Tümpel 1986, no. A 83). In 1984 Schwartz had already omitted this painting from his catalogue of Rembrandt paintings. In 2005 the RRP reattributed this painting to Rembrandt and it has been accepted as such since (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 638-646; Lammertse/Van der Veen 2006, p. 145-146; Weller et al. 2011, no. 16).
