Huidige toeschrijving: Rembrandt
In 1921 Bredius expressed doubts about the attribution to Rembrandt. He was quite sure the painting was a very clever (Belgian?) forgery dating from the middle of the nineteenth century (Bredius 1921). In the following year Hofstede de Groot responded with a defence of the attribution to Rembrandt (Hofstede de Groot 1922). However, Bredius did not revise his opinion and did not include the picture in his catalogue of Rembrandt paintings, published in 1935. Bredius idea that the painting was a 19th-century copy could be rejected completely when Blankert and Bolhuis traced the provenance of the painting back to the 18th century (Blankert/Blokhuis 1997).

In their 1761 description of Belvedere House in "London and its Environs", R. and J. Dodsley referred to the painting as a work of 'Francis Hals'. (Broos e.a. 2004, p. 218)
