Huidige toeschrijving: atelier van Rembrandt
The attribution of this painting to Rembrandt was first doubted in 1931 by Burroughs, who regarded the work as a copy (Burroughs 1931, p. 9, note 3). With the exception of Bredius in 1935, the rejection of the attribution to Rembrandt was thereafter accepted (Bredius 1935, no. 518; Bauch 1966, p. 49). Since 1997 the painting is considered to be a partial copy from Rembrandt's workshop (see for instance: Franken 1997, p. 69; website museum, accessed 2017-08-03).
