The attribution to Rembrandt was first doubted by Bredius in a handwritten note to his publisher in 1935, but disregarded (Krempel/Neumeister 2005-, vol. 2 (2005), p. 146). It disappeared from the Rembrandt literature entirely after 1969, when Gerson labelled it a nineteenth-century imitation (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 115; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 277). Currently, the Städel Museum attributes the work to an anonymous pupil of Rembrandt (Krempel/Neumeister 2005-, vol. 2 (2005), p. 148-149). Van de Wetering is of the opinion that the work is by Rembrandt, and ascribes the lesser quality to the fact that it would be a sketch or study rather than a completed painting (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 277).

1893 - mentioned as in the possession of Ráth in 1893 by Michel (Michel 1893, p. 559). The work left his collection before November 1900, as at this time the art dealer P. & D. Colnaghi was trying to sell the work to Henry Clay Frick (Quodbach 2011, p. 13).

1905 - 1933 Colnaghi was not able to sell the work in the United States, so took it to Europe in 1901 in the hope to sell it to Wilhelm von Bode, director of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie. Eventually it was purchased by the banker Robert von Mendelssohn in 1905 (Quodbach 2011, p. 13; Krempel/Neumeister 2005-, vol. 2 (2005), p. 144).

1933 - 1938 From 1933 until 1938, the work was in possession of Frau Giulietta von Mendelssohn, widow of Robert von Mendelssohn. It was kept in the depot of the Mendelssohn Bank.

1940 - Via the German art dealer Karl Haberstock, the Mendelssohn Bank sold the work to the German Reich for 900.000 Reichsmark. The intention was to include the painting in the Führermuseum in Linz (Backes 1988, p. 106, 108; Schwarz 2004, p. 324, no. XVIII/34).

After the war, the work came into the possession of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD) via one of the Allies' Central Collecting Points for looted art. It has been on loan to the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 1949 (Die Weltkunst, April 1949, p. 8) and to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (Van Schendel 1956, no. 78; Munich 1957, no. L 819).
