This painting was generally accepted as an autograph Rembrandt until the 1950's. From then on, different attributions have been made. Benesch was the first to suggest an attribution to Carel Fabritius (Benesch 1955, p. 147), an assumption supported by Sumowski and Bauch (Bauch 1966, p. 48; Sumowski 1957-58, p. 238; Sumowski 1968, p. 278-283). While Valentiner, Grigaut and Richardson upheld the attribution to Rembrandt (Valentiner 1956A, under no. 25; Grigaut 1956, p. 404-411; Richardson 1956-57, p. 58-59), more proposals for the creator of this painting have been made: an anonymus member of the school of Rembrandt (MacLaren 1960, under no. 45), style of Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 366), Nicolaes Maes (Sumowski 1983-94, vol. 3 (1984), no. 1322) and Samuel van Hoogstraten (Bruijn 1988, p. 322-333; Sumowski 1983-94, vol. 6 (1994)). Van de Wetering regards this painting as a Rembrandt (Van de Wetering/Kelch/Van den Boogert 2006, p. 196-200; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2011), p. 365-368; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 197). The Detroit Institute of Arts list the painting as "circle of Rembrandt" (online collection catalogue, accessed 2018-05-01).
