  • draagt signatuur en datum linksonder: Rembrandt f. 1658
Given the condition of the fragile dark sections in the painting it may be concluded that the signature in its present state is unreliable (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2010), no. 27).
Huidige toeschrijving
Rembrandt
of atelier van Rembrandt
The present painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt, until doubted by Tümpel in 1986. He argued that the painting deviated from Rembrandt's work on stylistic grounds and considered it to be from his workshop (Tümpel 1986, no. A26). According to the members of the Rembrandt Research Project its poor condition makes it difficult to ascertain whether it is by Rembrandt, or by one of his pupils or assistants. They attribute the present painting to Rembrandt or to one of his pupils (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2010), no. V27). As well as in the online catalogue of the National Gallery of Washington as the last volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt paintings the paintings is listed as an autograph Rembrandt (NGA online editions, accessed 2017-10-05; Corpus of Rembrandt paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 265).
