Het project The Horse in Art in RKDimages bestaat uit ruim 2300 records van kunstwerken waarop paarden (plus ezels en zebra’s) zijn te zien uit de periode 500 tot heden. Het betreft schilderijen, tekeningen, prenten, wandschilderingen, beeldhouwwerken en decoratieve kunst uit een grote verscheidenheid aan collecties. Hoewel de nadruk op Europese kunst ligt, zijn ook werken uit andere werelddelen opgenomen. Het doel van deze selectie is het tonen van de iconografie van het paard in al zijn vormen, zijn artistieke expressie en historisch belang. Er is niet gekozen voor een bepaald tijdvak, juist om het doorgaande belang van dit iconografisch onderwerp in alle eeuwen te laten zien. Bovendien is de selectie niet beperkt tot kunstenaars die zich concentreerden op dit onderwerp. Ook veel werken van kunstenaars die het paard in hun werk een ondergeschikte, maar wel interessante plaats gaven, zijn opgenomen. Bij de beeldhouwwerken is veel aandacht besteed aan werken in de openbare ruimte, die meestal episoden uit de geschiedenis van een land weergeven. Specifieke trefwoorden over rassen, functies en gangen zijn toegekend naast de gebruikelijke. Dit project is geïnitieerd en uitgevoerd door Boudewijn Commandeur die gedurende tientallen jaren afbeeldingen van equiden heeft verzameld, gedocumenteerd, beschreven en tenslotte heeft gedigitaliseerd. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The project The Horse in Art in RKDimages consists of about 2300 records of works of art showing horses (and donkeys, zebras) from the period 500 until the present time. It concerns paintings, drawings, prints, wall paintings, sculptures and decorative art from a large variety of collections. Although the emphasis is on European art, works from other parts of the world are also included. The aim of this selection is to show the iconography of the horse in all its varieties, its artistic expression and historical significance. No specific period was chosen, especially to demonstrate the ongoing importance of this iconographic subject through the ages. Moreover the selection is not limited to artists who concentrated on this subject. Also many works of artists who gave the horse a minor but interesting role, have been included. In the sculptures much attention has been paid to works in the public space, which often represent historical episodes of a country. Specific keywords about breeds, functions and gaits were added next to the usual ones. This project was initiated and executed by Boudewijn Commandeur who during tens of years collected images of equids, documented and described them, and finally digitalized them.
