Rieke van Leeuwen

Curriculum vitae and duties

Rieke van Leeuwen studied art history at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. From 1982-1994 she worked for the Mauritshuis in The Hague where she, initially as scientific staff member and later as curator, collaborated on various exhibitions and was responsible for the editing of catalogues and other publications.

She has worked for the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History since 1994. From 2001 till 2013 she was the head of Digital Collections. In this role she made an important contribution to the structure of RKDartists and RKDimages and regularly gave lectures and workshops on digitisation in cultural heritage. She is project leader of Gerson Digital since 2013, which documents the cultural exchange between the Netherlands and other European countries between 1500 and 1900.

In collaboration with the University of Torùn she published her first part of the Gerson Digital series on the cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Poland. In 2015 Gerson Digital: Denmark was published, which is a collaboration between the RKD and the University of Leiden, the Statens Museum for Art and Rosenborg Slott in Copenhagen. Together with various partners, including the ANKK (Arbeitskreis für Niederländische Kunst und Kulturgeschichte), she completed the project Gerson Digital: Germany, Austria and Silesia in 2018. Together with NIKI (Nederlands Interuniversitair Kunsthistorisch Instituut) in Florence Gerson Digital: Italy was published in 2019. Van Leeuwen is currently researching the cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Sweden, Spain and Portugal.
