Eldest son of the carver Pieter Jansz. van Calraet, who came to Dordrecht from Utrecht and married the widow Agneta Patero there in 1640. The two had six other children, including another sculptor, Hendrick, whose work is unknown. On July 7th, 1680 he married Anna Bisschop, daughter of the painter Cornelis Bisschop. They had five children, at least three of whom died young.

In the 1670s his still lifes were his first works which he signed with his full name; Van Hoogstraten's passage on the Dordrecht still-life painter of peaches was identified by Bredius in 1915 as Abraham van Calraet; at a later age he painted landscapes; the still lifes attributed by Hofstede de Groot to Aelbert Cuyp have again been attributed to Van Calraet (Van der Willigen/Meijer 2003)
