Son of Frans van Dyck, merchant, and his 2nd wife Maria Cuypers; brother of Theodoor van Dijck (aka Waltman) (1605-1668), canon and priest of the Norbertine Abbey at Minderhout: See Bull. Mus.R. de Belgique, 10/1960). His sisters Susanna, Cornelia, Isabella and Anna all became béguines (Lurie 1995). He married in London in 1638 Maria Ruthven. His legitimate daughter Justina was born 1 December 1641 and baptized on 9 December, the day Anthony van Dyck died. His illigitimate daughter with Margaret Lemon, Maria Teresia, was taken in by her aunt Suzanna, béguine in Antwerp. Maria Teresia received from her aunt the bulk of Van Dyck's inheritance to her, being fl. 15090,-; she married Sir (Joncker) Gabriël Essers, drossart of Bouckhoudt: the present day family van Anthony van Dyck comes from this line and took on the name Essers van Dyck.

    In 1609 Van Dyck was recorded in the Guild as apprentice of Hendrick van Balen I, together with Justus Sustermans (Rombouts/Van Lerius 1872/1961).

    According to witnesses during a trial in 1660, Van Dyck started his own studio with assistants ('knechten') already in 1615 in the house 'De Dom van Keulen' (Larsen 1988, vol. 1, p. 106-7); Van Dyck became a free master in the Guild of Saint Luke on 11 February 1615 (Rombouts/Van Lerius 1872/1961 vol. 1, p. 545, Larsen 1988, vol. 1, p. 107); at the same time he was an apprentice/assistant of Rubens.

    He received a passport to leave England on 28 February 1621.

    Here he studied works by Titian and Correggio; he met Lucas van Uffelen and Daniel Nys (Larsen 1975, p. 51-).

    On his way back to Antwerp he arrived in Rome early in 1623, where he made a portrait of cardinal Maffeo Barbarini, who would become pope Urban VIII (1568-1644) on 6 August 1623. This portrait is unfortunately lost. He also made a portrait of George Gage, the agent of King James I Stuart of England, who was in Rome between February and May 1623 (Larsen 1988, vol. I, p. 111) (Images 120571). The engraving after Van Dyck's portrait of cardinal Guido Bentivoglio (1579-1644) by Jean Morin of 1644 bears the inscription 'Ant. van Dyck pinxit Anno 1623'.

    Here, on his way back to Antwerp, he painted the portrait of Ferdinand Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (Larsen 1988, vol. I, p. 111).

    He probably travelled by way of Turino and Milano; in Genoa he probably stayed with Cornelis de Wael for almost a year.

    According to his biographers this must have been a very dramatic stay due to the outbreak of the pestilence, of which his patron, duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy, vice-roy of Sicily, died on 3 August 1624. According to Salomon 2012, p. 43 he stayed till September 1625 in Palermo, but according to older literature till September 1624.

There exists a note for payment for Van Dyck' s lodgings, dated 21 May; first payment by Charles I dated 8 August. Van Dyck received his elevation in the nobility on 5 July 1632. At the same time he received his house on the Thames in Blackfriars.

His property was divided between his wife Maria, his daughters Justianiana and Maria Theresa (out of wedlock) and his sister Susanna and her children.
