    1906-13 Paris stay: joins the circle around Gertrude Stein and deals with Expressionism, Cubism and Fauvism imprinted by Henri Matisse; she does not visit Akademy; but founds together with David Rosen the artist group of the Acad. Moderne, who works under the guidance of Charles Guérin, Albert Marquet and Othon Friesz and exhibits their works annually.
  • New York City 1913 - 1915
    In 1913, she returns to New York, where she opens a studio and participates in the Amory Show. She meets Katherine S. Dreier, with whom she has a close friendship. Together with Dreier and her sister Dorothea G. worked in 1914 in the Cooperative Mural Workshops.
  • Montgomery (Alabama) 1915 - 1922
    From 1915 she established herself as a painter expressionist. landscape of the amer. South. In Montgomery, where she spends the summer months each year, her most important works are created. She paints the simple rural. life predominantly of the black population, which binds them into large landscapes dominating the pictures.
  • New York City 1922 - 1944
    From 1922 until her death, she teaches as one of the most influential teachers at the Art Students League, New York.
