Scipione Borghese

male / Italian
cardinal, jurist, art collector, patron
Borghese collected antiquities and contemporary sculpture. He was patron of Gianlorenzo Bernini and Caravaggio. Besides, Horst Gerson mentions him as benefactor of Gerard van Honthorst. His collection contained artworks by artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Marten Mandekens, Peter Paul Rubens, Denys Calvaert, Lambert van Noort and Frederick van Valckenborch. In 1613/14, the cardinal moved his collection to the Villa Borghese, which was specially build for this purpose. After his death, Borghese’s heirs sold many works. The remainders came in the possession of the city of Rome around 1903.
