highly esteemed as still-life painter by Spanish, French and English collectors (Saur 2003)
Period of activity
1629 - 1639
ca. 1629-1639; first time documented in 1629 (Jordan/Cherry 1995)
Active in
1629 - 1636
An artist of uncertain biography and origin, the only confirmed reference to him is his documentation in Madrid between 1629 and 1636. During these years, he appears to have been in the service of Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, an Italian nobleman and painter who wielded significant influence at the Spanish Court. Crescenzi gave four grape paintings by El Labrador to Sir Francis Cottington, the English ambassador extraordinary in Madrid, and, pleased with these works, commissioned additional paintings from him for the service of King Charles I of England. At least one more batch of paintings was ordered by the British king. His only signed work is a still life with flowers dated 1636, held in a private collection, which marks the last known reference to his work (Aterido 2013).
