Son of George of Brunswick-Calenberg (1582-1641) and Anna Eleonora of Hesse-Darmstadt (1601-1659). Married on 9 October 1653 Dorothea Sophie of Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1636-1689): the marriage remained without issue (his widow married on 4 June 1668 in Berlin Frederick William of Brandenburg, 'the Great Elector').
Biographical information
Active in
  • Hannover 1641
Succeeded his father in 1641 as duke, residing in Hanover under his uncle August. In 1642 he became a member of the 'Societas fructifera' or Order of the Palm Tree, a language academy in the Renaissance tradition with mainly members from the high reformed nobility (although this was not by necessity). His nickname was 'der Reinherzige' (the pure-hearted) with the motto ' labt und stärket' (refresh and strengthen). The duke's emblem was the lemon blossom (Citrus medica L.). He was seen as self-indulgent and given to alcohol. He was not fond of reigning and came quickly into conflict with the citizens of Hanover.
  • Celle 1648
When his uncle Frederick died he left his younger brother George William the government of the principality of Calenberg and settled 1648 in the pricipality of Luneburg, residing in Celle. He left the government to his former court master Friedrich Schenck von Winterstädt as stadtholder
