Corresponding: the subject of a merry company conversing, smoking and enjoying wine; the use of several full-length figures and elements in the composition such as the seated man facing left en profil, at a table; elements of the interior such as the wall with windows at the left and a trapdoor in the ceiling; the motif of a woman with a jug (as observed by A. Waiboer). - Interior with a man and two women
De Hooch adopted the subject of a mixed company in conversation, drinking wine. Also repeated is the use of full-length figures as well as the general composition with a standing woman as a repoussoir to the left, a seated man depicted in profile accompanied by a woman at his left, the rectangular accents in the background and the general color scheme with red, yellow and white hues (as observed by A. Waiboer). - Young Woman Reading a Letter
Both scenes feature the motif of the reflection on the glass pane of the window of a female protagonist and the sensitive treatment of the light (Sutton 1980, p. 23). - Inn scene
Van Mieris adopted the motif of a standing woman filling a glass for a seated man, the motif of a hat lying on the floor, the map on the wall, the cap on the head of the seated man and the use of full-length figures. It appears that the costume of De Hooch's seated woman was used by Van Maries for his own piece (see the head scarf and the yellow bodice) (as observed by E. Schavemaker).
