This painting is generally viewed as an autograph Rembrandt (see for instance: Bredius 1935, no. 185; Van Gelder 1950, p. 328; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 192). Only Tümpel expressed his doubts, regarding it as a painting from a pupil of Rembrandt (Tümpel 1986, no. A 39).
Date

dated 1643

In the early art-historical literature the painting is dated variously from c. 1632 (Hofstede de Groot 1907-1928, vol. 6 (1915), no. 457), c. 1633 (Bredius 1935, no. 185) and c. 1635 (Bauch 1966, no. 165). In 1950 Van Gelder mentioned that after cleaning the painting the date 1643 became visible (Van Gelder 1950, p. 328). Although not all art-historians are convinced of the authenticity of the painting, it is generally dated 1643 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 192).

Physical relationship

It has been suggested that the 'Half-figure of a woman with a beret' of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin (RKDimages no. 22201) is the pendant of the Woburn painting. Together the paintings could represent Boaz and Ruth (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 192 and 193).
