according to an annotation in a copy of the sale catalogue (RKD, The Hague) , Lugt no. 29816: "L'Apôtre saint Paul dans sa prison. Il est assis sur la pierre du cachot, tourné vers la gauche, la main gauche tenant un livre ouvert, posé sur les genoux, le bras droit accoudé sur le livre et la main ramenée contre la bouche; le pied droit est posé nu sur la sandale. Longue barbe blanche, cheveux blancs, rejetés en arrière et ébourissés, Les yeux fixes et pensifs ont une expression prodigieuse. Longue robe grise, d'un étoffe épaisse et lourde. A droite, un gros manteau verdâtre; à gauche, sur la pierre, des livres, une valise et la longue épée. La lumière vient de ce côté, par une fenêtre, et de vifs rayons frappent la muraille, derrière la tête du personnage. Sur le livre ouvert, on lit: Rembrandt fecit. Et au-dessous, sur le mur, un monogramme très-compliqué, où l'on peut trouver les lettres initiiales de Rembrandt van Rijn, Hermans Zoon (fils de Herman), suivi de la date 1627. Cette date 1627 est la plus anciene qu'on retrouve sur les peintures de Rembrandt, qui n'avait alors que vingt ans. Vient ensuite la date 1630 que nous avons signalée sur un portrait du musée de Cassel, puis quelques dates 1631, encore très-rares. (Voir le no suivant.) Puis la Leçon d'anatomie, du musée de la Haye, datée 1632. - Ce Rembrandt de 1627 est bien précieux pour l'histoire du grand artiste. Décrit dans les Cat. de 1719 et de 1746. No 136 du Cat. 1857. B. - H., 0m, 70. - L., 0m, 58."

Research and restoration projects

The study focused mainly on grounds, and to some extent on paint layers. Samples were taken of 75 panel and canvas paintings attributed to Rembrandt.
Prof. Dr. Hermann Kühn took the samples at the painting's institution with a stereomicroscope after which he analyzed them at the Doerner Institut in Munich.
