Together with the other paintings of the Passion series the Descent from the Cross is mentioned in the inventory of 20 March 1668 of Amalia van Solms among the paintings in the Court at the Noordeinde. It is not known who inherited the Passion series after the death of Amalia van Solms in 1675 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 65; Brown/Kelch/ Van Thiel 1991, no. 13).
1668 - 1675 - Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz
It is not known how and when the Passion series came into the possession of Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine before his death in 1716. In 1719 it is mentioned in the catalogue of the collection of the Prince-elector of Düsseldorf: "Die Abnehmung vom Creutz mit 15. Figuren. 2 Fuss 9 Zoll x 2 Fuss 4 Zoll" (Karsch 1719, no. 89). Because of threats of war the collection of the Prince-elector was removed from Düsseldorf several times. In 1806 the collection was transferred to München and added to the art collection of the House of Wittelsbach there (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 65; Brown/Kelch/ Van Thiel 1991, no. 13). - Alte Pinakothek , inv./cat.nr. 395
