herman de vries (1931) is one of the most prominent artists of his generation. Originally a botanist, the artist has been illuminating parts of nature in sculptures, collages and installations since the 1970s, revealing his roots within the ZERO movement.

As a publisher, de vries is less well known. However, from 1974 – 50 years ago – he has been publishing artist publications with his eschenau summer press & temporary travelling press publications. From the beginning, he also invited others to publish, including James Lee Byars, Marinus Boezem and, more recently, Melanie Bonajo. This collaboration with several artists resulted in striking experiments in form and content. More than 75 volumes have since appeared, all of which are shown and explained in full in herman de vries – publisher, with texts written by RKD curators Lynne van Rhijn and Ton Geerts.
