    In London student and assistant of Richard Wilson, who encouraged him to study nature carefully. 1764-66 study at the Sociey of arts. Became 1769 a student at the newly opened Royal Academy Schools. Became 1772 a Fellow of the Society of Artists and in 1773 its director.
  • Houghton Hall (Norfolk) 1773
    On behalf of the publisher John Boydell, Farinton and his brother George went to Houghton Hall in the summer of 1773 to create engravings of the collection of paintings left by Robert Walpole, which was soon sold to tsarina Catherine II in St. Petersburg; Farington copied a. o. after Claude Lorrain and Marten de Vos.

    He settled in London, but traveled extensively throughout the UK and occasionally. on the European Continent; After being elected an associate (1783) and member (1785) of the Royal Academy (RA) he became one of the most influential personalities. He often participated in committees, including for the decoration of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and showed a strong commitment to the charities of the RA, e.g. the establishment of a pension fund. His services to the financial organization of the RA were recognized in 1809 by the awarding of a silver plate. Even outside the institution, he was a sought-after art expert and middleman for art purchases by private collectors, especially from Northern England and the Midlands. He also showed a keen interest in technical questions of the arts. He is one of the early sponsors of Thomas Lawrence and John Constable; he is today mainly known for his extensive diaries, the existence of which only became known in the 20th century. These cover a period from July 1st, 1779 to the day of his death and allow a deep insight into the affairs of the RA (Saur 2003).

    During the Peace of Amiens in 1802, he travelled to Paris with the artists Benjamin West, John Hoppner, and Johann Heinrich Füssli, to visit the Musée Napoléon (the future Louvre Museum); he also visited the studios of Jacques-Louis David and François Gérard.
