son of Jacob Koninck I and Susanna Dalbernij (died after 1651); married in 1679 to Dorothea Tranberg (d. between 5 December 1704 and 7 January 1715), a lady-in-waiting of Queen Charlotte Amalie. Their first child Susanne Elisabeth was born 1 May 1679 at the latest while the marriage first took place at the end of the year, c. 29 December 1679. The list of Coning's children is in the administration of the German reformed church: Susanne Elisabeth, d. 1 May 1758; Johan Herman, d. 1737; child born medio 1680, buried 1 June 1681; Charlotte Amalia, baptized German reformed, Copenhagen, July 1687. She was still alive in 1717 and probably died in 1735; Clara Juliana Johanna, baptized Thursday 25 July 1689, probably died before 1715; Jacob Arnold, baptized Thursday 17 March 1692, died before 1715; Engel Catharina, baptized Thursday 8 March 1695, died before 1715; Dorothea, baptized Thursday 13 March 1696, still alive in 1742. Jacob Coning married again in 1715 to Catharina Hindael (buried 29 November 1735), daughter of royal shipper Johann Hindael (Mørch 1991).

  • Amsterdam 1658 - 1676
    went with his parents to Amsterdam. According to Houbraken he lent books on perspective to Jan Verkolje I when the latter was practising in his youth (Houbraken 1721).
  • Kopenhagen 1676 - 1686
    went to Copenhagen c. 1676; after problems with the painter's guild he was allowed by the king to establish himself as a free artist in Copenhagen, in 1677. In 1679 he married Dorothea Tranberg, a lady-in-waiting of Queen Charlotte Amalie; from 1680 onwards the painter worked in the king's service (Heiberg 1994).

    documented in Amsterdam to settle an affair concerning his (former) pupil Daniel de Koninck (Bredius 1915, p. 166-169; Brask 1941; Mørch 1991; Bjerke 2013).
  • Kopenhagen 1690
    In 1690 he became a citizen of Copenhagen (Bjerke 2013).
  • Oslo 1698 - 1699
    was sent to Norway by king Christian V to paint prospects of towns and castles the King visited in 1685; for this tour he received money from the King himself. Coning was in Norway 1698-1699 (Bjerke 2013, Mørch 1991).
  • Kopenhagen 1701 - 1724
    In 1701 he signed, along with five other artists (Thomas Quellinus, Hendrik Krock, Wilcken Riboldt, Otto de Willarts and Georg Saleman), a petition to the king's proposal to establish an art academy in Copenhagen. On 5 December 1704 he witnessed at a baptismal in the Skt. Petri Kirke (Bjerke 2013). According to Von Wurzbach, p. 323, in 1713 he signed and dated a self-portrait 'Jac. Coning fecit. Aetatis suae 65, Copen. 1713' (in 1901 this portrait was in the collection of landscape painter Harald Foss in Copenhagen). He married again in 1715 to Catharina Hindael. In 1719 he organized an auction of his paintings in his own house (Bjerke 2013).
